HONG KONG: The American tele-orthodontics company SmileDirectClub has expanded into Asia by opening two of its flagship SmileShops in key Hong Kong shopping districts. The company says that its own research shows that the cost of orthodontic care is one of the main barriers preventing Hong Kong residents from having their teeth straightened and that it will offer an affordable and safe treatment option to them.
The company has opened SmileShops in the Sheung Wan area, which lies just west of the main business district and is popular with younger residents of the city and students, and in Tsim Sha Tsui, a bustling shopping and tourist area situated in the south of the Kowloon Peninsula.
SmileDirectClub said in a statement that its research showed that approximately 70% of people in the populous Chinese territory would feel more confident if they had a straighter smile. The cost of orthodontic care is prohibitive for many of the city’s residents, the company said, adding that its orthodontic treatment model costs up to 60% less than traditional fixed appliances.
“We see great potential in Hong Kong’s dental and orthodontic care market, and we are very confident consumers in Hong Kong will embrace the ability to have access to a safe, affordable, and quality experience,” said Kay Oswald, president of the company’s international business, in the statement.
The company will offer “doctor-directed” remote clear aligner therapy for a flat rate of HK$14,500 (€1,700), and consumers also have the option of paying in instalments: a deposit of HK$2,000, followed by monthly payments of HK$650 per month for 24 months.
The US company is also now present in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK.
