HONG KONG, China: CyberSmile, a new training centre for computer-assisted implant surgery, opened in Hong Kong earlier this year. Established by Drs James Chow, Nikos Mattheos and Alessandro Pozzi, the centre provides hands-on education in dynamic navigation, robotic surgery and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in implant dentistry. The founders conceived CyberSmile in response to what they describe as a widening gap between the rapid development of implant technologies and structured clinical training.
Computer-assisted implant surgery is a rapidly developing field. Dynamic navigation, AI-assisted planning software and a growing range of surgical robots are expanding the options available for digital treatment planning and guided implant placement. However, these technologies do not always integrate seamlessly, and clinicians may need to work across multiple scanning, planning, navigation and robotic systems.
A recently published International Team for Implantology white paper, co-authored by Drs Chow, Mattheos and Pozzi, among others, examined workflows in dynamic and robotic computer-assisted implant surgery. The paper describes robotic computer-assisted implant surgery as an extension of dynamic navigation and highlights interoperability limitations between different software and devices. It also sets out the fundamental principles of dynamic and robotic workflows and the steps common to both.
According to CyberSmile’s founders, these interoperability limitations have created a parallel challenge in education. “The technology has moved ahead of the training,” said Dr Mattheos, a periodontist and academic. “Clinicians are increasingly asked to make sense of complex software and multiple devices in often overlapping parts of the treatment, and in many cases, there is still no established pathway to learn how to do that safely.”
CyberSmile was created as a training hub intended to bring different elements of computer-assisted implant surgery together in one setting rather than focusing on individual technologies in isolation. Hong Kong was chosen for its long-standing role as a meeting point between China and the wider world, with the aim of drawing clinicians, researchers and manufacturers from China, the wider Asia-Pacific region and the international dental community.

The facility is equipped with five surgical robots, multiple navigation systems, facial and intra-oral scanners, AI-assisted planning software and 3D-printing technology. The set-up is intended to allow clinicians to gain hands-on experience across complete digital workflows and to compare different platforms rather than relying solely on manufacturer demonstrations.
With specific reference to the surgical robots, Dr Chow, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon experienced in dynamic navigation and robotic implant surgery, said: “The equipment is capable of remarkable precision. What decides the outcome is whether the surgeon behind it, or supervising it, actually has control over the entire workflow, of which the robot is but one step.”
Addressing the broader clinical implications of these systems, Dr Pozzi, whose research includes digital implant workflows, navigation and photogrammetry, emphasised that their introduction requires changes in clinical practice. “New technologies can only deliver when combined with a new mindset and paradigm of care,” he said.
CyberSmile’s next course, a masterclass in robotics and agentic AI in implant dentistry, is scheduled for 26–28 October. The three-day programme will include live robotic surgeries, hands-on practice with implant robots, and sessions on building and operating agentic AI tools.
