KNITTLINGEN, Germany/KOBLACH, Austria: Last week, Thomas Gienger, dental technician and trainer at Amann Girrbach, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 58. Gienger was valued for his comprehensive knowledge and over 20 years’ experience in dental laboratories and the dental industry. He was a first-generation user of CAD/CAM technology and helped train thousands of dental technicians.
German-born Gienger began his career in dental technology after graduating from high school. From the beginning, his interests lay in the technically challenging areas―cone and attachment technology, one-piece casting and electroplating, as well as all aspects of metallurgy―because this appealed most to him, and he pursued extensive further training.
After holding various laboratory positions, he went on to make a name for himself in the dental industry as a trainer at bredent in Senden in Germany in 2000. In 2003, Gienger joined Amann Girrbach and discovered CAD/CAM technology, then still in its infancy. Gienger contributed greatly to the success of Ceramill Base, Amann Girrbach’s copy milling system, and generously shared his knowledge with an entire generation of dental technicians.
He finally discovered his playground in the field of CAD/CAM development. Always curious but also critical, he implemented the new possibilities in his courses in a manner that everyone could comprehend. He rapidly advanced to become the CAD/CAM expert and explored the intricate depths of software and hardware in collaboration with users.
With his warm and humorous manner, Gienger attracted a large dental community to the courses that he held at home in Germany and abroad. His colleagues mourn the loss of a brilliant adviser, a helpful colleague and a good friend.
