GENEVA, Switzerland: FDI World Dental Federation is happy to report that an updated draft of the Global Oral Health Action Plan (2023–2030) from the World Health Organization (WHO) has incorporated a number of critical recommendations made by FDI. Changes in the revised version included improved oral healthcare policy development, better leadership positions for members of the oral health profession and a direct request to governments to help with reaching the goal of access to essential oral healthcare services by 80% of the global population.

The updated WHO action plan now better aligns with FDI’s Vision 2030 of “delivering optimal oral health for all”, an overarching programme also designed to bring lawmakers, organisations and member stakeholders together to effect change globally for oral health. This also means making strides in improving community engagement and help for a greater number of impoverished nations. The updates to the plan also include a direct push for governments to provide universal coverage for oral healthcare by 2030.

FDI notes that ongoing reporting to international congresses is vital for the success of improving global oral health outcomes. Just as WHO continues to regularly report to the World Health Assembly, FDI will continue to participate in key congresses, apprising decision-makers of updated core and complementary indicators that are useful for nations to monitor oral healthcare accountability. National dental associations are also vital in ensuring these goals are met in time, and FDI has recommitted its support to these associations as they strive to improve global oral health outcomes.
