BERLIN, Germany: Dozens of dental professionals arrived at the ESMT Berlin this morning to attend the 2018 ROOTS SUMMIT. The first day of the event, which will be taking place until 1 July in the German capital, is all about hands-on courses, sponsored by some of the leading suppliers of oral care products, and interactive learning with internationally prominent practitioners in the field.

The main highlight of Thursday morning was Dr Stephen Buchanan’s hands-on course titled, “The art of endodontics”. Buchanan, who was introduced in front of a packed house by ROOTS SUMMIT 2018 Scientific Chairman Dr David Jaramillo, is internationally well known for his patented dental instruments and techniques. During the course, he trained participants in state-of-the-art endodontic procedures, with practice in anterior and premolar TrueTooth training replicas, using contemporary concepts of access, negotiation, shaping, irrigation and 3-D obturation.

Other courses included teaching by Drs Mario Zuolo, Sergio Rosler and Klaus Lauterbach. In Zuolo’s workshop, sponsored by VDW, ROOTS SUMMIT attendees learnt about root canal shaping with reciprocating motion and simultaneous electronic length determination. Participants had the opportunity to work on resin models or extracted teeth with VDW’s RECIPROC blue instruments and R-PILOT glide path file used with reciprocating motion on endodontic motors with simultaneous working length control. Instrument selection depending on root canal anatomy and the instrument characteristics were explained and illustrated with clinical cases.

Rosler—with the support of Seiler Instruments—presented a course titled “Impact of the dental operating microscope on the diagnostic and therapeutic stages of root canal therapy”. This hands-on course focused on the use of the dental operating microscope in endodontics and how it can positively impact the dentist’s working ergonomics and the accuracy and predictability of endodontic procedures. It also aimed to develop the participants’ skills in setting up and using the dental operating microscope.

According to Lauterbach, over the past few years, there have been many developments in the shaping and cleaning of root canals, but none of them have been able to adapt to the anatomical extensions of root canal systems. Based on the MaxWire NiTi technology, the new XP-endo sequence (FKG Dentaire) has caused a paradigm shift in endodontics. The Adaptive Core technology allows the file to expand and therefore enables a 3-D approach to ensure safe treatment and long-term success for patients. The workshop demonstrated the treatment options on special 3-D printed teeth. Participants were trained using this new technology step by step to learn how the XP-endo Shaper and Finisher can easily be integrated into the endodontist’s daily work.

With a varied hands-on course programme, the ROOTS SUMMIT caters for all kinds of needs and with up to 24 participants per workshop—who are accommodated in five fully equipped study rooms—there are plenty of opportunities to network with fellow endodontists. The 90-minute courses are sponsored by some of the leading suppliers of oral care products and services, including META BIOMED, Dental Engineering Laboratories, KaVo Kerr, COLTENE and FKG Dentaire (a full sponsor list can be viewed here).
