ANN ARBOR, Mich., US: Kuraray Noritake Dental recently launched CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal, a flowable composite with a simplified approach to shade matching. Earlier this year, the product received a prestigious award from US-based DENTAL ADVISOR for its convincing in vitro performance.

Ideal properties for the anterior and posterior

CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal features a smart combination of enamel-like translucency, dentine-like chroma and unique light diffusion technology, and once polymerised, the material blends naturally with the surrounding tooth structure. These features provide exceptional shade matching capabilities and allow effortless shade selection from the material’s set of just two complementary shades: Universal and Universal Dark.

Apart from intuitive shade selection, the flowable composite offers another major advantage: exceptionally high strength. Boasting a flexural strength of 152 MPa and a compressive strength of 374 MPa, CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal (Super Low) is as strong as many paste-type composites. The material also comes in two viscosities, Low and Super Low (in the US, only Super Low is available).

CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal is suitable for use in stress-bearing areas, and its indications include:

  • direct restoration for all cavity classes, cervical lesions (such as root surface caries and V-shaped defects), tooth wear and tooth erosion;
  • placement of a cavity base or liner;
  • correction of tooth position and shape (including diastemas and malformed teeth);
  • intra-oral repair of fractured restorations; and
  • cementation of ceramic and composite inlays, onlays and veneers less than 2 mm thick.

Optimal in vitro performance

Ideal shade matching capabilities enable simplified selection from the two complementary shades Universal (U) and Universal Dark (UD).

The Super Low variant of CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal was tested by evaluators at the DENTAL ADVISOR Biomaterials Research Center and compared with two other flowable composites. Among the properties evaluated were flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, fracture toughness, compressive strength and radiopacity. Shade matching ability for restoring Class V cavities in denture teeth of Shades A1, B2, C3 and D4 was also assessed. Finally, the material’s radiopacity and flow properties were tested.

CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES Flow Universal performed exceptionally well across all points of evaluation. Its physical properties ranked among the highest for flowable composites and were comparable to those of paste-type alternatives. Its radiopacity was found to be ideal, and its viscosity was praised for allowing the material to hold its shape after application. Regarding its aesthetic properties, the product’s two shades were confirmed to match a broad range of natural tooth shades.

The DENTAL ADVISOR awards were initiated to help clinicians navigate the variety of new dental solutions available. Its research awards honour dental manufacturers that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to developing and advancing dental materials to enhance treatment quality.
