CAGLIARI, Italy: As part of this year's international congress of the Italian Dental Association (AIO), a vast number of hands-on courses in aesthetics, endodontics, implantology and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) therapy will be presented by top global experts. The event will be held from 13 to 15 June 2019 in Chia on the island of Sardinia in Italy.

The courses will begin on Thursday, 13 June, starting with Dr Giovanni Zucchelli from the University of Bologna presenting a course on the treatment of soft tissues surrounding the natural dentition.

“The main reason for performing gingival repositioning plastic surgical procedures stems from a specific request from the patient wishing to cover an unaesthetic exposed root surface that’s visible when he or she eats or smiles. After the surgical treatment, even a remaining root exposure of a few millimetres can be a problem, but with new knowledge in soft-tissue management, this can be resolved and the root covered using a small amount of connective tissue,” explained Zucchelli.

The course will provide step-by-step surgical procedures for root coverage, the harvesting of connective tissue grafts, as well as suturing techniques. Participants will practise flap design in areas of single and multiple recession, split-thickness flap design surrounding the papilla, the necessary flap thickness needed for a coronal repositioning flap, connective tissue harvesting, the use of connective tissue substitutes, free gingival grafts to increase the amount of peri-implant keratinised tissue and simultaneous implant/graft placement.

The all-day course, to be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., will be limited to 40 participants. It can be booked for €500 alone or €400 if combined with a congress registration.

In the afternoon, Dr Alessandro Rampello from the Sapienza University of Rome will be holding a course focusing on the treatment of TMJ disorders from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a maximum of 40 participants. The course will describe how problems of the TMJ can be treated using new therapeutic strategies, including a therapy that actively re-educates the tongue using an innovative occlusal appliance called the Ri.P.A.Ra. The course can be booked for €150 alone or €50 if combined with the congress.

“It’s not just a bite that’s inserted between the teeth, but a functionally active re-educator of the cranial-cervical-mandibular components that actively stimulates dynamic patient behavioural changes, leading to a neuromuscular re-education with a positive effect on TMJ and facial pain,” Rampello stated.

In addition, Dr Alfonso Coscarella from Grosseto in Tuscany will be holding a course on the prevention and treatment of biological complications in implantology from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The theoretical part of the course will cover magnifying systems, microsurgical instruments, the AIRFLOW (EMS) and the Er:YAG laser, which decontaminates the implant surface, all owing for more effective preventative and regenerative procedures to be performed. During the hands-on part of the course, the use of a new-generation AIRFLOW and the Er:YAG laser in treating early-stage peri-implantitis will be demonstrated. The course can be booked for €150 alone or €50 if combined with the congress.

Dr Gianluca Plotino (Photograph: AIO)

On Friday, 14 June, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Drs Nicola Grande, Gianluca Plotino and Eugenio Pedullà from Catania in Italy will be holding a theoretical and hands-on course for a maximum of 40 participants. The morning session will discuss parameters used in treatment planning, as well as possible complications. In the afternoon, two types of canal preparations will be covered with their relative protocols based on differing clinical situations. The participants, divided into two groups, will then practise both types of preparations from start to finish on extracted teeth with already opened access cavities. The course can be booked for €300 alone or €200 if combined with the congress.

Drs Alessandro and Andrea Agnini (Photograph: AIO)

A second Friday course will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and be held by brothers Drs Andrea and Alessandro Agnini from Modena in Italy, who will discuss surgical veneer grafting (SVG), a surgical prosthetic approach to the management of immediate implants in areas of high aesthetic impact. The workshop will explore all of the parameters necessary to correctly diagnose the post-extraction alveolar bone and select the appropriate treatment modality. During the hands-on part of the workshop, they will illustrate the SVG technique, which combines bone and connective tissue grafts with immediate implant placement. Criteria necessary for a minimally invasive protocol and the indications for the use of bone grafting to fill the gap and the use of a connective tissue graft will also be discussed. The course can be booked for €150 alone or €50 if combined with the congress.
