AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: Ahead of the company’s participation at EuroPerio9, Philips Oral Healthcare recently hosted its 11th Global KOL Symposium in Amsterdam. Themed “Connecting the mouth and body in the 21st century healthcare”, the event examined the mounting scientific evidence linking oral and systemic health.

Over two full days of lectures and workshops, international speakers discussed the newest developments in research, including the significant shift in the perspective on the relationship between oral health and overall well-being, as well as the changing role of digital technologies in oral care, particularly in the areas of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and pregnancy.

“Our symposium brought together industry leaders, facilitating discussion and understanding on the links between overall health and oral health care. At Philips, our mission is to improve the lives of three billion people by 2025 through meaningful innovations in health care”, said Michael-John Kuehne, a Philips Oral Healthcare business leader. “By combining insights, evidence and learning, we’re able to focus on driving advancements with our digital solutions and education platforms for dental professionals to help them help their patients, ultimately working together to better outcomes and overall longer-term health and well-being.”

Among others, keynote speaker Prof. R. Bruce Donoff, Dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston in the US, shared his experience of the integration within the specialties of oral and maxillofacial surgery and oral cancer care in his lecture “Integrate oral health into medicine: Past and future state”. The welcome reception also addressed the history of dentistry, its integration into the present and how dentistry must change its scope in order to better serve the world’s population, as the role of education, clinical practice, benefits, outcomes and policy must all be addressed.

The symposium discussed the latest trends and digital systems available to patients and dental professionals worldwide, with Dr Robert Kalla, a practitioner with considerable experience in digital systems and patient data management, examining how these systems benefit patient outcomes.

Philips Oral Healthcare is attending EuroPerio9 (Booth 10.15) and is staging workshops today, tomorrow and on Saturday, 23 June, that will convey the symposium findings.
