NEW YORK, U.S.: The 2020 Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) went virtual owing to the pandemic, but its 2021 iteration is set to return to an in-person format. To minimize the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, the event’s organizing committee has announced that proof of vaccination against the virus will be compulsory for attendees.

The 2021 GNYDM is scheduled to be held from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1. Though the first two days of the congress will take place online, Avery Sandiford, education director of the GNYDM, confirmed to Dental Tribune that the remaining portion of the event will take place "entirely in person." According to the organizers, more than 350 companies will be exhibiting at the Javits Center, and hundreds of hands-on workshops will take place—a stark contrast to the purely online nature of last year's GNYDM.

Though the U.S. has a reasonably high COVID-19 vaccination rate—approximately 60.5% of the population over 12 years of age is fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—infection rates and deaths have risen quickly and substantially since June and continue to trend upward. With this in mind, the 2021 GNYDM will require all attendees and exhibitors not only to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, but also to wear face masks at all times when indoors. Sanitizing stations and hand-washing facilities will be available throughout the event space, and there will be an emphasis on continuous cleaning of high-touch areas, the organizers noted.
