BUENOS AIRES, Argentina: The Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future (ACFF) held its ninth annual summit on 7 September during the recent FDI World Dental Congress in the Argentine capital. At the summit, a range of oral health professionals and advocates provided their perspectives on the positive changes to dental school curricula regarding education on caries prevention and an update on the importance of paying for health in dentistry.

The event included the delivery of an update on the second Policy Lab meeting, hosted by the ACFF in conjunction with the Policy Institute and Dental Institute at King’s College London. This meeting, titled “Towards paying for health in dentistry—How do we create and implement acceptable prevention-based dental payment systems to achieve and maintain health outcomes?”, was discussed at the summit by Policy Lab attendee Dr James Taylor, Chief Dental Officer at Canada’s Public Health Agency.

Taylor’s presentation was followed by Prof. Nigel Pitts, Global Chairman of the ACFF and Director of the Innovation and Translation Centre at King’s College London Dental Institute, discussing the importance of the Policy Lab’s developments to the dental community and other stakeholders. Pitts emphasised the central role that the ACFF plays in facilitating this dialogue.

“This year’s Policy Lab meeting has provided a foundation on which the debate around shifting the focus of remuneration for dental teams can be built,” said Pitts.

“For many years, it has been acknowledged that a shift is needed in how we reward our dental teams in order to encourage a more preventive approach to controlling caries as a key part of achieving good outcomes from patient care. The 2018 Dental Policy Lab allowed the space to explore key aspects involved in ‘building blueprints’ for successful, locally adaptable payment systems in different countries. These systems will offer appropriate payment to dental teams offering comprehensive, personalised caries control and management to their patients.”
