IRVINE, Calif., US: Together with nonprofit organization Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County, global dental laser provider BIOLASE recently hosted an educational training session for a good cause. At the event, University of Southern California (USC) pediatric dentistry faculty members and residents associated with Healthy Smiles were taught how to use dental lasers for a variety of common pediatric dental procedures.

Held in the BIOLASE Learning Center at the BIOLASE global headquarters in Irvine, the training provided the opportunity to learn about the benefits of dental lasers. Attendees were trained in laser physics and safety, laser–tissue interactions, restorative dentistry using minimal anesthesia and pediatric procedures, including frenectomies for ankyloglossia patients. All participants received certification from BIOLASE in dental laser use upon completion of the training session.

“Our ongoing partnership with BIOLASE, including the recent pediatric educational session with USC faculty and residents, ensures our community is better positioned to receive the most innovative oral health solutions available today,” said Ria Berger, CEO of Healthy Smiles, which aims to improve the oral health of local children.

Since 2003, Healthy Smiles has provided crucial dental services to the underserved children of Orange County through clinical and school-based programs. By pairing prevention and outreach efforts in the field with advanced restorative treatment in its two clinics, the organization’s goal is to bring dental care and oral health education to every child in need. Each year, it visits over 500 community events and reaches 100,000 children and parents.

“The next generation of practitioners must be educated about the most innovative dental technologies in order to provide the best possible patient experience—one that is less invasive with less anesthesia, pain and anxiety,” said Chief Dental Officer of BIOLASE Dr. Sam Low. “The training session we held in partnership with Healthy Smiles and USC is part of greater efforts to help shape the future of dentistry, to increase adoption of dental lasers to improve patient outcomes and ensure that dental professionals are tapping into all tools that are available to them.”

Medical device company BIOLASE develops, manufactures, markets and sells laser systems in dentistry and medicine and also markets and sells dental imaging equipment, including 3-D CAD/CAM intra-oral scanners and digital dentistry software. The company has sold over 37,600 laser systems to date in over 90 countries around the world.

BIOLASE announced that it will be installing a Waterlase Express laser to support Healthy Smiles’ mobile clinic, which visits elementary schools throughout Orange County to provide preventive care to needy children. The company previously donated a Waterlase iPlus laser to the Healthy Smiles Garden Grove clinic as an ongoing educational resource.
