Prof. Lior Shapira, the scientific chair of EuroPerio11, which will take place fom 14 to 17 May, brings a wealth of experience to the helm of this premier congress. As professor of periodontal research at the Hebrew University–Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem, he has been instrumental in advancing periodontal science. His tenure as president of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) from 2021 to 2022 was marked by significant strides in the promotion of diversity and global collaboration in the field. In this interview, Prof. Shapira discusses his vision for EuroPerio11, new educational formats and key themes in the programme, and the importance of engaging a diverse, international community.

Prof. Shapira, having previously served as president of the EFP, how has your leadership experience influenced your approach as scientific chair of EuroPerio11?
Serving as EFP president gave me a comprehensive understanding of the federation’s core values—scientific excellence, collaboration and inclusivity. These principles have guided every step of my work as scientific chair of EuroPerio11. My experience taught me the importance of bringing diverse voices to the table and building a programme that is not only grounded in rigorous science but also clinically relevant and globally engaging. I aimed to ensure that EuroPerio11 reflects both continuity and innovation, as part of the EFP’s legacy, while embracing new directions in periodontics and implant dentistry.

“Dentistry is evolving rapidly, and EuroPerio11 reflects that evolution.”

EuroPerio11 is introducing innovative formats such as live surgeries and interactive sessions. Could you elaborate on how these features will enhance the learning experience for attendees?
We wanted to go beyond traditional lectures and create immersive experiences that mirror real-world clinical practice. For instance, three live surgeries will allow participants to witness procedures performed by top clinicians in real time, offering unparalleled insight into surgical decision-making and techniques. These surgeries will be broadcast to the convention centre from the dental school of the Sigmund Freud Private University in Vienna, just 500 m away, and the surgeons will join the stage 10 minutes after the procedures for discussion. These formats make the content more dynamic and memorable, bridging the gap between knowledge and application.

The scientific programme covers a diverse range of topics, including artificial intelligence in dentistry and women’s oral health. What motivated the inclusion of these emerging subjects, and what impact do you anticipate they will have on clinical practice?
Dentistry is evolving rapidly, and EuroPerio11 reflects that evolution. We included topics such as artificial intelligence because it is influencing diagnostics, treatment planning and patient communication. Understanding these tools is becoming essential for clinicians.
Similarly, addressing women’s oral health acknowledges the growing evidence of gender- and sex-specific differences in periodontal disease and treatment outcomes—areas that were neglected for many years. By bringing attention to these topics, we hope to foster more personalised, equitable and forward-looking care in daily practice.

“EuroPerio11 will be the most comprehensive, cutting-edge event in periodontics and implant dentistry to date.”

There is significant representation of female speakers and a focus on engaging young professionals in the programme. How else is EuroPerio11 fostering diversity and inclusion in the field of periodontics?
We have made diversity and inclusion a central priority—not just in words but in action. The EuroPerio11 committee has worked hard to ensure balanced representation in terms of sex, age and geography. Forty-five per cent of our speakers and moderators are women—the highest number ever. We also have speakers from more than 35 countries. This commitment extends to the inclusion of young professionals, early-career researchers and both pan-European and global voices. We believe that excellence in periodontics is strengthened by diversity, and EuroPerio11 is a platform where everyone can contribute, learn and grow.

Organising an event of this magnitude presents numerous challenges. What have been some of the most rewarding aspects and obstacles you’ve encountered as scientific chair, and how have you addressed them?
One major challenge was curating a programme that offers both scientific depth and broad appeal. With so many brilliant minds in our field, selecting speakers and topics involved tough decisions. However, this process has also been one of the most rewarding aspects because it has involved working closely with amazing colleagues such as Dr Elena Figuero and Prof. Anton Sculean in the EuroPerio11 committee, reaching out to every speaker and moderator, and seeing the enthusiasm of everyone involved. It has been a long and inspiring journey.

For dental professionals contemplating attendance, what makes EuroPerio11 an unmissable event, and how do you envision it contributing to their professional development?
EuroPerio11 will be the most comprehensive, cutting-edge event in periodontics and implant dentistry to date. Whether you are a clinician, researcher, educator or student, you will find content that speaks directly to your daily challenges and professional aspirations. Covering everything, including major updates on systemic health, regeneration, peri-implantitis and digital workflows, the programme is designed to elevate your knowledge and skills. Beyond the science, EuroPerio11 is about community—sharing ideas, forging collaborations and feeling part of something bigger. EuroPerio11 will be the place where the future of our field takes shape.
