KYRENIA, Cyprus: On 13 and 14 March, the executive committee and members of the International Association of Dental Students (IADS) met in Kyrenia for its 64th Mid-Year Meeting. With a number of lectures and presentations, some of the other major news to come out of the two-day meeting was the approval of the new constitution of IADS, which is now in compliance with Swiss law, and the implementation of the new regional categorisation scheme, which is in concordance with categorisation of the World Health Organization and FDI World Dental Federation.

In collaboration with Near East University, the Northern Cyprus Association of Dental Students and Puzzle Travel, the entire programme was arranged to ensure participants enjoyed not only the lectures and workshops, but also the beauty and diversity of the Mediterranean island.

Speaking about the meeting, IADS General Secretary Natália Savková said, “The local organising committee of the 64thIADS MYM, Northern Cyprus 2018, has done an incredible job. They have proven that anything is possible! Despite the amount of work they had on their shoulders and challenges they had to face, they have made sure the meeting will never be forgotten by its participants.”

Over the course of the meeting, two training sessions, one on team building and the other on the treasury, were given. According to IADS, this was valuable in bringing greater cohesion into the current work structure and allowed for members to become more informed on some of the finer IADS processes. In addition to the training sessions, a number of lectures were given. Among these was a paper on the link between cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease by Prof. Bruno Loos, a presentation on new trends in digital workflow by Prof. Kaan Orhan, and a lecture by Dr Tuğba Bezgin on regenerative endodontics in young permanent teeth.

During the meeting, it was also announced that five new member associations had joined IADS. They are the Lithuanian association of dental students (Studentų odontologų asociacija), Iraqi Dental Students Association, Ethiopian Dental Students’ Association, Nairobi University Dental Students Association and Makerere University Dental Students Association.

The next IADS Mid-Year Meeting will be held in March 2019 in Strasbourg in France.
