GLASGOW, UK: Attendees of this year’s British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) are the lucky recipients of two presentations by the esteemed American orthodontist Dr Jay Bowman.
In the first, Bowman considered that, when examining treatments involving the use of mini-screw anchorage, it appears in a parallax view that moving from buccal interradicular insertion of mini-screws to the palate often affords greater reliability and versatility for orthodontic biomechanics. Specifically, one palatal insertion site for mini-screws, combined with simple laboratory modifications of the trans-palatal arch, can be employed as anchorage to assist in the correction of a wide variety of malocclusions.
In the second paper, Bowman will examine techniques for improving the predictability of desired results using clear aligners. A variety of concepts, methods and adjuncts have been introduced to enhance the effectiveness of clear aligners. As a consequence, the scope of biomechanics and the type of malocclusions that can be more predictably treated have increased. As one example, the inclusion of mini-screw temporary skeletal anchorage has permitted the addition of direct and indirect anchorage to support and control more predictable programmed tooth movements with aligners.
Bowman is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. He is on the faculty of the University of Michigan, Saint Louis University, Case Western Reserve University and Seton Hill University, and was previously the Milton Sims Visiting Professor at the University of Adelaide in Australia. He is co-author and editor of the book Mini-Implants in Orthodontics: Innovative Anchorage Concepts. Bowman has placed over 5,000 mini-screws and has had over 150 articles and book chapters published.
Bowman’s first presentation, titled “Uno, dos, tres: All miniscrews in one place (mostly)”, was held in the SEC Armadillo auditorium at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, 19 September. Bowman will also deliver “Drastic plastic: Improving the predictability of clear aligners” in the SEC Armadillo at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, 20 September.
