DOHA, Qatar: Qatar University (QU) has announced the launch of the country’s first dental medicine college. Starting from September 2019, the QU College of Dental Medicine will be offering a six-year programme for their Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. As the fourth member of the QU Health Department, the new college will complement the existing Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health Sciences and further expand the possibilities of inter-professional learning at QU.

During a recent press conference, President of QU Dr Hassan Al-Derham, showed great excitement to launch the new college. “Now is an important time to prepare a new generation of skilled Qatari doctors who are connected with their community, the changes in society and economy and the health requirements that are needed,” he said. In addition, he expressed his gratitude to the faculty and the Board of Trustees, who approved the foundation of the college last month.

Vice-President and founding Dean of the College of Medicine Dr Egon Toft was also present at the conference. He introduced the content of the curriculum and assured attendees that the new programme will cultivate a culture of active learning and stimulate students’ critical thinking skills. “Delivered in close collaboration with the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), students will benefit from early clinical experience in state-of-the-art facilities, including a dental simulation clinic and academic dental hospital at HMC, student-tailored elective studies, community-based education and research possibilities, which are key elements of the curriculum,” Toft explained.

Owing to a high demand for dental and oral healthcare in Qatar caused by oral disease, the establishment, which is in line with Qatar’s National Health strategy 2018‒2022, is expected to serve as an advocate for oral hygiene, as well as help educate the dental workforce itself. The college will follow international standards set by accreditation agencies in the United States, Australia and Europe and will closely collaborate with international accreditors to guarantee compliance with high-quality academic standards. The prospective students will be eligible for sponsorships through the MOAD bursary programme, provided they sign an agreement to join the HMC and the PHCC dental workforce after graduating. The new oral health institute will integrate education and research in dental medicine and will benefit from the existing collaboration between the HMC and international research institutes.
