NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia: According to some experts, deterioration of human health is one of the most pressing problems in modern medicine—concerning specifically hard tissue such as bones and teeth. Now, a team of Russian chemists has developed a one-stage technology for producing artificial nano-hydroxyapatite. Used for making implants, restoring tooth enamel and skin defects, it could be the breakthrough advancement needed to combat these issues.
Headed by Prof. Alexander Knyazev from the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod, the chemists believe the key advantage of the new technology is increased biocompatibility with human cells compared with existing materials. According to the research, additional befits are the possibility of chemical modification for controlling biological and mechanical properties and the possibility of creating various materials.
With these possibilities, the researchers are now taking the discovery a step further. Following a new thread of research, their goal is to create hydroxyapatite-based materials that combine antimicrobial properties and biological compatibility with human cells. The team believes this can be achieved by chemical modification of the compound itself.
With a number of possible applications for the new technology, the chemists are currently focusing on orthopaedics and traumatology, the pharmaceutical industry, aesthetic medicine, and coatings for medical devices and instruments.
The research is being carried out in cooperation with the Volga District Medical Centre of Russia’s health ministry.
