LANGENAU, Germany: In 2023, international dental specialist COLTENE presented its perfectly coordinated file sequence to the dental community for the first time. Since then, dentists have given positive feedback on its use in clinical practice. COLTENE has now published a comprehensive OGSF booklet on the subject in five languages, documenting clinical cases and user reports from dental practices throughout Europe.

The abbreviation “OGSF” stands for the concise sequence of the files: Opener, Glider, Shaper and Finisher. This four-part sequence covers all the essential treatment steps and sets out the fundamental tools for successful root canal treatment. The Opener opens the tooth to be treated. The Glider helps to create a glide path which follows the natural contour of the canal. Taking the canal anatomy into account, the Shaper rapidly and efficiently removes bacteria as well as infected tissue and creates the prerequisites for good obturation. The Finisher ensures that the apical area is adequately cleaned and that there is sufficient space for irrigating solutions to reach the apex. The sequence thus provides a solid foundation for optimal obturation.

Five stars awarded in Europe

The HyFlex EDM OGSF file set is available throughout Europe and in many other core global markets and has been tested and introduced into daily practice routines by numerous practice teams—passing with flying colours. Romanian dentist Dr Andreea Roşu particularly emphasised the ease of committing the file sequence to memory: “With COLTENE’s new HyFlex EDM OGSF sequence endodontic procedures becomes easier. Owing to the defined, easy-to-remember sequence, learning to use these files is relatively quick, and being intuitive, the sequence is easily recalled and repeated.”

Similarly, Dr Gianluca Fumei from Italy described the OGSF sequence as “a turning point in endodontics” and highlighted how easy it is to learn and apply in clinical practice. Dr Dhiraj Arora, a dentist in the UK, commented that the files also reduce the risk of ledging and other iatrogenic errors: “HyFlex EDM OGSF files definitely know their way around curves, reducing the risk of ledging, transportation and perforation. Their controlled memory allows them to follow the canal’s anatomy, and they can be prebent like stainless-steel files for easier access. The defined treatment procedure simplifies preparation and makes the sequence easy to learn.”

The sequence of four files has also received several five-star ratings from practitioners in Germany. Dr Friederike Listander, who recently published a user report on the OGSF file sequence, summarised working with the sequence as follows: “The HyFlex EDM OGSF sequence makes work immensely easier, and the files glide effortlessly through the canals.” Dr Thomas Rieger, who was particularly pleased with the optimised workflows and the time saved, came to a similar conclusion: “With just a few peckings, I reach the measured working length without any stops in between, so to speak. Previously, a file had to be inserted into the root canal several times. That is no longer necessary here! The OGSF sequence can be applied effortlessly even in difficult cases.”

The booklet is supplemented by studies on the fracture resistance of the HyFlex EDM file systems. A video outlining the advantages of the OGSF sequence and a video tutorial in which Dr Eugenio Pedullà (associate professor at Catania University in Italy) demonstrates how to use the sequence round off the new information package for interested practice teams.

One solution for all cases

The user reports have confirmed that COLTENE’s simple, easy-to-learn OGSF protocol, in which the files reach the working length with just a few pecks, offers dentists a tailor-made solution for fast and reliable preparation in both everyday as well as (more) complex endodontic cases. The all-purpose sequence of four files ensures optimised treatment procedures, added safety in everyday practice and a fresh approach to
endodontics.
