New clinical data on short implants
Short implants are a solution for patients with limited bone who are unwilling or unable to undergo bone grafting. In a recently published study led by Prof. Christoph Hämmerle from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, a randomized multicenter clinical study compared the use of short 6 mm OsseoSpeed implants (Astra Tech Implant System) with 11–15 mm implants and grafting.
In the study, the authors showed the important benefits of using OsseoSpeed short implants.1 They require a simplified surgical procedure with no need for grafting, a surgical time reduced by 30 per cent and a surgical cost reduced by 50 per cent. Patient satisfaction is higher owing to less pain and fewer complications, as well as cheaper treatment.
OsseoSpeed Profile EV implant
Marginal bone preservation is an important factor in achieving excellent aesthetic results. However, it is a clinical reality that crestal bone resorbs after tooth extraction or tooth loss. This resorption is often more pronounced on the buccal side, resulting in a lingual-to-buccal sloped ridge.
The OsseoSpeed Profile EV implant is placed level with both buccal and lingual marginal bone, where the design supports the soft tissue by preserving marginal bone in the 360° around the implant. In addition, it may reduce the need for bone augmentation.
Latest clinical results on osteoporotic patients
Recently published results of a five-year study on OsseoSpeed implants concluded that female osteoporotic patients can be treated with dental implants and that the clinical outcome is expected to be as good as for nonosteoporotic women.2
Recent data indicates that patients with osteoporosis show similar good results to a control group without osteoporosis. Dental implants with the fluoride-modified, nano-structured OsseoSpeed surface were evaluated up to five years after the procedure, and the patients in the osteoporotic group showed similar good bone and soft-tissue response to the healthy control group. In both groups, the mean marginal bone loss was only 0.09 mm overall. The patients in this study had been diagnosed with osteoporosis but had not yet received bisphosphonates, medication against bone resorption.
Symbios Algipore—Proven reliability and effectiveness
Algipore originates from calcifying red algae. It is natural, bone-like, biocompatible, osteoconductive and stable during bone formation. Symbios Biphasic Bone Graft Material (BGM) is a bone grafting material sourced from nature. This granule-based bone grafting material is derived from red marine algae. The composition has been specially formulated for rapid turnover as new bone forms within the graft site. Symbios Biphasic BGM has a composition of 20 per cent hydroxyapatite for space maintenance and slow resorption and 80 per cent beta-tricalcium phosphate for faster resorption. Symbios Biphasic BGM is considered a close equivalent to Symbios Algipore.
