ORLANDO, Fla., U.S.: With SureSmile, the clinician starts with a digital impression, takes a 2-D or 3-D image, uploads patient photographs, approves the treatment plan, and has the aligners produced—done. At Dentsply Sirona World 2018, which only just ended in Orlando, the company presented this new aligner solution, which has been developed to enable both orthodontists and general practitioners to offer patients more treatment options and different price models with one versatile platform.

Introduced as fully digital with maximum flexibility, the new SureSmile aligners are designed and produced based on a digital impression scan and 2-D or 3-D images. The solution uses the newly designed Elemetrix software, to which all data, including a photograph of the patient’s face, are uploaded. An interactive diagnostic tool registers the digital treatment plan to the patient photograph to ensure an ideal smile design.

To ensure maximum flexibility, SureSmile aligners are available with choices ranging from all-inclusive pricing to paying per aligner, as well as in-office do-it-yourself aligner design.

According to Dentsply Sirona, SureSmile full-service aligners are a clinically proven, clinician-controlled product that all dental professionals in the U.S. will be able to offer to their patients. Combining comprehensive clinical experience with radiographs and smile photographs with digital model data results in a higher degree of predictability and ideal esthetic outcomes, the company explained.

The new aligners are designed and fabricated at a technical center in Dallas, Texas, that employs clinicians and advanced digital technicians with decades of 3-D modeling experience. Automated staging and attachment placement ensure a high plan acceptance rate. Unlike the traditional, one-size-fits-all approach, the clinician remains in control and, in particular, has the discretion to design an aligner that fits the patient. This is ensured by the practitioner being able to intervene in the Elemetrix process if desired, even when ordering the design and production, to drive customization.

The new SureSmile aligners are based on many years of clinical experience at OraMetrix, a digital pioneer now part of Dentsply Sirona with a rich history of using advanced robotics for bending arch wires and the developer of the SureSmile platform, the most advanced orthodontic treatment planning system. A study, titled “Accuracy, reproducibility, and time efficiency of dental measurements using different technologies”, published in the American journal of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics in 2014, indicated that SureSmile CAD models were the most accurate measured.

The end-to-end digital workflow is supported by the CEREC Omnicam, with which the orthodontist can perform a guided full-jaw scan using the CEREC Ortho software. Physical models are no longer necessary. To perform diagnostic analysis, imaging systems such as Orthophos SL can be used.

“Our goal was to design a full-service product for all clinicians, delivering a clinically proven and clinician-controlled clear aligner system,” stated Brad Clatt, Group Vice President of Global Orthodontics at Dentsply Sirona. “The unique linking of Ceph to 3-D model and smile photo enables more biologically achievable results that support faster treatment time. The clinician has ultimate control over the treatment plan with a comprehensive tool kit that allows for full personalization, as no two patients are alike.”

Powered by Elemetrix, the system is open and accepts all STL files, but use of the CEREC Omnicam is preferred. One software platform offers dental professionals multiple treatment options: fabricated clear aligners, in-office-designed aligners and indirect bonding. Clinicians finally have a flexible product to offer patients different treatment options and different price models for the modern practice, said Dentsply Sirona.

SureSmile aligners are now available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and some European countries. Owing to various certification and registration periods, the products might not be immediately available in all countries.
