ZURICH, Switzerland: Dental professionals are well placed to identify abnormal sores in the mouth to aid in early diagnosis of oral cancer. In a free Dental Tribune Study Club webinar on Tuesday, 8 October, registered dental hygienist Shannon Nanne, a former Executive Director of the Global Oral Cancer Forum (GOCF), will pass on her expertise in the area of recognising intra- and extra-oral irregular lesions.

In the webinar, Nanne will focus on oral melanoma case presentations in describing best practice. She will pass on the skills needed to be able to explain to patients the reasons that they have developed radiation-induced xerostomia and the intra-oral problems associated with it. In addition, she will advise webinar participants on the best management options available to make patients more comfortable in dealing with their symptoms.

Nanne graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in 1994. She is currently on the organising committee for GOCF 2020 and is helping to promote the changes required to make a substantial impact on the incidence, morbidity and mortality of oral cancer worldwide. She has authored articles in RDH, JPH, In Focus and Dimensions of Dental Hygiene and is a key opinion leader for several companies, publications and associations and an ambassador of the Oral Cancer Foundation.

The 1-hour webinar, titled “Prevention vs prosecution—how this life could have been saved”, will be broadcast live on Tuesday, 8 October, at 9 p.m.CEST. Attendance is free of charge after easy registration on the website. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat window and have the opportunity to earn a continuing education credit by completing a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic.
