SAN JOSE, Calif, U.S.: Now in its ninth year of providing funding, global medical device company Align Technology recently announced 11 new recipients of research grants under its annual research award program for studies that seek to better understand treatment in orthodontics and dentistry. This year, close to $300,000 is being awarded to researchers at universities in the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.

According to Align, the global interest in research on dental and orthodontic treatment continues to grow, as is evident from the increasing number of applications the company has received from universities all over the globe. “As leaders in clear aligner therapy, we are committed to the advancement of the orthodontic and dental fields,” said Zelko Relic, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Global Research and Development at Align Technology.

This year, the funded projects cover a wide range of topics, including orthodontic-induced inflammatory root resorption, composite material for attachments, clear aligners in the elderly population, oral impacts of Invisalign treatment versus fixed lingual appliances, gingival crevicular fluid, Invisalign clear aligners plus iTero scanning and CBCT, shorter treatment time, Invisalign G6, and demineralization with fixed versus Invisalign treatment.

“Innovations in technology have provided more insight than ever before into clinical and scientific research, and we are pleased to support universities around the world aimed at the improvement of dental and orthodontic patient care,” said Relic.

All applications received were reviewed and prioritized by an independent academic committee in a blind evaluation, with the final recipients determined by Align Technology. This year, four researchers from the Americas received grants, three researchers from Europe and four researchers from Asia Pacific.
