Interview: A non-invasive, quick and easy method to collect epithelial cells

Early detection of oral cancer or other serious oral health conditions is significant for successful treatment. To improve the process of collecting tissue from the mouth, a researcher at Ege University’s Faculty of Dentistry in Izmir in Turkey has developed the oral biopsy brush, which allows sampling of the entire oral epithelium. Dental Tribune Online spoke with Dr Pelin Güneri, Professor at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, about the functionality of the brush, its benefits and plans for a market introduction.

Austrian dentist refuses to treat Erdoğan supporters

For three weeks, his practice bore a sign stating that supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan would not be treated. The note was shared widely on social networks and the subject of much debate. Turkish television even reported live from the scene.

Study challenges understanding of oral health in the Stone Age

A team of researchers from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the University of Arkansas has challenged this understanding with their study of a modern-day foraging tribe, instead suggesting that oral health may be influenced by gender and residential setting.

COLOGNE, Germany: At this year’s IDS, the Association of Dental Dealers in Europe (ADDE) has presented the new edition of its market review, the 2017 Survey on the European Dental Trade, which covers all the relevant topics and trends concerning the European dental industry. Again produced in collaboration with the Federation of the European Dental Industry, the report indicates a further shift towards digital dentistry, manifesting in overall growth of online shopping and use of CAD/CAM systems and intra-oral scanners. Carestream Dental to be established as independent company

ROCHESTER, N.Y., USA: Carestream has announced that it will be selling its dental digital business to funds managed by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, a global private equity firm, and CareCapital Advisors, a specialist investment platform focused on dental and consumer health in Asia. The new independent company will be named Carestream Dental. Subject to regulatory and other approvals, the sale is expected to close in the third quarter of 2017.

Overall, more than 155,000 people from over 150 countries and more than 2,300 companies from around the globe attended. The next IDS will take place from 12 to 16 March 2019. Periodontologists announce first European Gum Health Day
