OSLO, Norway: The Norwegian capital is the setting for the annual meeting of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) this year, which is taking place at the University of Oslo’s Faculty of Dentistry from 22 to 24 August. Through the event, which centres around dental education in a changing society, the ADEE—which promotes health care for all Europeans—brings together its broad membership base of European dental schools, specialist societies and national associations concerned with dental education. Among the corporate partners of this year’s meeting is Swiss oral health company Curaden, whose individually trained oral prophylaxis (iTOP) programme ties in with the ADEE’s mission through its focus on lifelong oral health.

As part of the ADEE’s Corporate Partners Platforms, and bearing in mind Curaden’s “Better health for you” slogan, as well as its holistic vision of interconnected oral and systemic health, dentist and iTOP trainer Dr Franka Baranović Huber will be presenting her doctoral thesis. Her paper will discuss her findings on the efficacy of the new generation of prime prophylaxis interdental brushes in reducing bleeding gingivae and re-establishing gingival health in individuals displaying Type I embrasures, and report on patient compliance after six months.

The thesis’s clinical results provide proof of the clinical efficacy and safety of the daily use of these interdental brushes, as well as high patient acceptance, leading to high long-term compliance rates. However, repeated individual instruction, calibration and practical training of the correct interdental brushing technique by a dental health professional play a crucial role in achieving successful primary prevention and avoiding potential damage to the soft tissue, interdental papillae and teeth, according to Huber.

The iTOP programme provides a systematic way to learn optimal, non-traumatic oral care through hands-on training (Touch to Teach). It is based on the dental professional practising his or her enhanced cleaning technique on a daily basis on himself or herself and, eventually, motivating and setting up patients for a lifetime of oral health. Huber’s presentation is taking place on 23 August at 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Her thesis is titled “Effectiveness of calibrated interdental brushes in reducing the Interdental Bleeding Index in subjects with intact interdental papillae: Clinical trial on gingival inflammation self-treatment and patient compliance after 6 months”.
