COPENHAGEN/HERNING, Denmark: Planmed, which is part of Planmeca Group, provided its improved Planmed Verity CBCT scanner to the 2018 IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) Ice Hockey World Championship in Denmark, held earlier this month. The scanner was part of the set-up at the on-site emergency rooms at both venues, Royal Arena in Copenhagen and Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning. Planmed Verity was used to diagnose fractures of the extremities and the maxillofacial area, as well as dental injuries, throughout the tournament.

Planmed Verity enabled the medical staff at the World Championship to provide high-quality first aid treatments quickly. It had previously been successfully used in this capacity at the 2012 IIHF World Championship in Finland and Sweden and received positive feedback for its performance at both tournaments.

“Planmed Verity helps medical staff to improve diagnostics and to plan treatments more efficiently. It is very important that teams know they have a high-quality CBCT imaging option readily available at the arena in case of injuries and emergencies. When players and team staff members can rely on the result of a scan, it allows them to move forward with confidence,” said Dr Markku Tuominen, a medical supervisor at the tournament in Denmark. Tuominen has worked at Ice Hockey World Championships for years and seen the benefits of Planmed Verity first-hand in both 2012 and 2018.

Planmed Verity was recently enhanced with improvements that have made the CBCT scanner even more versatile, according to the manufacturer. The new Planmeca CALM (Correction Algorithm for Latent Movement) it uses helps compensate for the effects of patient movement, preventing human error and making imaging more predictable.

Furthermore, the Planmeca Ultra Low Dose imaging protocol has reduced the scanner’s already low radiation dose by 50 per cent without compromising image quality, which means that 3-D images can now be obtained at a dose close to that of standard 2-D imaging, according to the company. In addition, Planmed Verity’s new head and neck imaging mode allows the capture of even more precise images of the entire dental area.

“We were excited to be able to supply our renewed Planmed Verity scanner to the World Championship. From past experience, we know that it is very useful when diagnosing injuries quickly and it helps players and teams to focus on their games,” said Juhamatti Malm, Director of Product Portfolio and Business Development at Planmed.
