Patent hosts EuroPerio session on zero peri-implantitis

VIENNA, Austria: According to a large-scale study review by Derks et al.,¹ one in five implant patients develops peri-implantitis, and nearly twice as many suffer from peri-implant mucositis, which can progress to peri-implantitis if left untreated. Peri-implantitis causes irreversible damage that compromises the long-term aesthetics and function of implant restorations—and often results in implant failure. In a recent consensus workshop, the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) classified peri-implantitis as a growing public health concern due to its high prevalence.²

Patent has demonstrated in two long-term studies that it is possible to achieve zero cases of peri-implantitis over extended periods of function, making it the first and only two-piece implant system worldwide to reach this milestone.³,

The key to this success lies in the zero peri-implantitis concept. This innovative approach combines three essential factors to prevent plaque bacteria from penetrating the soft tissue, triggering inflammation and colonising within the hard and soft tissue zones. The concept relies on a transmucosal implant design that avoids microgaps within the tissues, incorporates bacteria-proof connections, and fosters a strong bond with the soft tissue.

Scientific session at EuroPerio11

Tomorrow, four world-renowned experts will gather for a groundbreaking session at EuroPerio11 to explore Patent’s zero peri-implantitis concept. Prof. Anton Sculean, chair of EuroPerio11 from Switzerland, will ask whether the novel zero peri-implantitis concept could be a valid treatment option for periodontal patients. Prof. Gil Alcoforado, president of the European Association for Osseointegration from Portugal, will address the question of whether peri-implant health has improved through the shift from tissue-level to bone-level designs. Dr Roland Glauser of Cosmodent Zurich in Switzerland will examine whether the soft tissue bond is the missing element in the prevention of peri-implant diseases. Prof. Andrea Pilloni of Sapienza University of Rome in Italy, will focus on how early soft tissue healing patterns influence long-term treatment outcomes.

These leading experts will examine the evolution of implant designs, particularly comparing tissue-level and bone-level systems. They will explain how findings on biological performance and associated risk factors—such as fragile soft tissue adhesion, screw-retained restorations, and microgaps within the tissue—have led to the development of the zero peri-implantitis concept.

Studies: Zero peri-implantitis finally achievable

The success of this concept has been confirmed in long-term studies conducted at universities in Germany and Austria. Researchers documented the performance of two-piece Patent implants over periods ranging from nine to twelve years. The findings revealed no cases of peri-implantitis and only minimal occurrences of peri-implant mucositis, even in high-risk patients. This included individuals with periodontitis, systemic diseases such as diabetes, cancer or multiple sclerosis, poor oral hygiene, and those who smoke.

Limited seating for EuroPerio11 session

Attendance at the zero peri-implantitis session will be limited due to space constraints. The session presents a rare opportunity to examine current insights in implant design and disease prevention from leading voices in implant dentistry and periodontology. The session, titled “Zero peri-implantitis―the prevention concept in implant dentistry,” will take place on 15 May from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in room Schubert 4–6.
