NEW YORK, U.S.: When it comes to endodontic treatment, elimination of the microbial flora from the root canal system is a primary focus. In a free Dental Tribune Study Club webinar on Tuesday, April 24, an expert will be discussing new technology available in laser endodontics and the evolution of the use of shock waves as a means of cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system.
The Fotona PIPS system (photon-induced photoacoustic streaming) is a novel application for laser-activated irrigation. It uses the Er:YAG laser with a wavelength of 2,940 nm, which is delivered to the irrigant in the access cavity with a conical and stripped fiber tip. Owing to this wavelength being highly absorbed by water, it causes boiling and micro-explosions in the irrigating solution, inducing cavitation. Research in this field led to the development of SWEEPS (shock wave enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming), which is a new method for cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system and the focus of the webinar.
Endodontic specialist and webinar host Dr. Igor Križnar graduated in 2006 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and began working as an assistant at the faculty’s department of endodontics and operative dentistry, acquiring the professional title of Dental Specialist in Endodontics in 2014. In December 2015, Križnar began working full time in a private clinical practice limited mainly to endodontics, and he earned his PhD in endodontics from the University of Ljubljana in 2016.
The 1-hour webinar, titled “Evolution of the bubble—New frontiers in laser endodontics,” will be broadcast live on Tuesday, April 24, at 1 p.m. EDT. Attendance is free of charge after easy registration on the website. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat window and have the opportunity to earn a continuing education credit by completing a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic.
Dental professionals who are interested in attending the course may register online here.
