LONDON, UK: The SKY fast & fixed implant of bredent improves bone quality and quantity and reduces the risk of complications. The majority of patients selected for restoration with SKY fast & fixed have teeth that are not worth preserving and are the main cause of chronic inflammation. Extraction of the infected teeth does not completely remove the cause of the inflammation, as harmful bacteria remain in the alveoli and quickly grow again. This is where antimicrobial photodynamic therapy with HELBO comes into play: the treatment disinfects the extraction sockets by means of a photosensitive dye combined with low-energy light of the TheraLite laser—safely, reliably and completely painlessly.

Numerous benefits

According to the company, the therapeutic effectiveness of HELBO therapy has already been proved by many studies. A recent study published in the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry confirms the decades of experience of immediate implantation in combination with HELBO treatment leading to significantly better bone quality and quantity compared with conventional cleaning.1 Moreover, through the use of sterile dye and probes, there is no additional risk during therapy.

HELBO therapy offers further advantages, including mitigating complications. Complications such as delayed healing or even implant loss after immediate implantation are significantly reduced through its use. The reduction of complications and emergency visits, as well as accelerated and improved tissue regeneration, has economically positive effects for the dental practice, as the patient is usually not charged for the extra chairside time resulting from the treatment of complications.

An additional advantage of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy is the time it takes to perform. Disinfection with HELBO during surgery only extends the treatment time by 5–10 minutes, depending on the number of alveoli to be disinfected.

Positive user experience

Dr Dragana Rakašević, who is a research associate at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Belgrade in Serbia and earned her PhD in peri-implantitis treatment and photodynamic therapy, commented: “I have been using HELBO for the last ten years now, and I have had 100% satisfactory outcomes. This therapy has been reported as a completely safe method, so we can say that it is completely risk-free. It suits all types of patients, including children. When identifying any kind of inflammation and disease, regardless of the patient’s age, you can rest assured that HELBO will give you increased confidence to resolve it, even in intransigent and complex cases.”

Dr Rakašević continued: “I am often asked about what clinical indications I use HELBO for. Firstly, I use it for the treatment of peri-implant disease, peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis. It is successfully used in the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis, which is my primary topic of research. I also use HELBO in numerous non-surgical and surgical therapies, including implantology, oral surgery, periodontics and maxillofacial surgery. The purpose of this therapy is not only to decontaminate but also to prepare tissue for bone augmentation and implant placement. Moreover, the endodontic treatment of children and adults with or without periapical lesions could be combined with either non-surgical or surgical procedures, as well as the treatment of oral lichen planus, herpes and candidiasis.”

The bredent Academy is covering this topic in a webinar titled “HELBO laser—essential in oral surgery and periimplantitis management”.
